Voices Of Vienna

The Vienna Boys Choir (“Wiener Sängerknaben”) is a living national treasure and a legendary cultural institution whose history remarkably dates back to the Middle Ages. Now a prestigious independent concert choir, it’s known the world over for its ethereal sound and diverse repertoire, which includes everything from medieval music to contemporary pieces. Comprising boys aged between 9 and 14, the choir is admired for its unique timbre and purity of tone, which also stems from its rigorous training and strict admittance requirements.

Backstory

The idea for this Collection was born after the production of choral recordings for the Amazon Prime fantasy series “The Rings of Power”, the prequel to “The Lord of the Rings”. The essential element in Bear McCreary’s score is the atmospheric use of choirs, which were recorded at Synchron Stage Vienna in 2020 and 2021. This large-scale project was our first collaboration with the Vienna Boys Choir.

During the first sampling session at Synchron Stage Vienna, the boys demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and professionalism, rivaling and even surpassing adult choirs in some aspects. As 20 members filled our Stage A with their sublime voices, their joy of singing, combined with expert youth vocal training, was evident in every note. Their stamina and ability to adapt to the unique demands of the sampling sessions were particularly impressive, resulting in recordings that really captured the magic of this extraordinary choir.

Joyful Articulations

The recordings include short notes, long notes, legatos and marcatos of the vowels AA (ah) and UU (oo) as well as MM (humming), and a variety of consonants in combination with short and long vowels. Mixer presets crafted by our experts make it easy to place the Vienna Boys Choir in diverse musical environments that range from close-mic’d to distant settings and to reverb-drenched churches.
