About Midnight Grand
Recorded in a spacious concert hall, this Steinway Model D Grand Piano features a layer of cotton between the hammers and strings, which imparts a delicate, cinematic sound. It comes with three distinct atmosphere layers and detailed noise controls, enhancing both its musicality and realism.
About The Instrument
Midnight Grand is a grand piano featuring a cotton layer the hammers and strings, producing a delicate and cinematic tone ideal for modern scoring and music production.
Recorded in a spacious concert hall, the library uses a range of microphone positions blended into a single stereo mix, offering a well-balanced sound between close and ambient perspectives. It captures all the nuanced characteristics of the piano, including key releases, pedal noises, and even room tone, providing an intimate and realistic feel.
As with our other piano libraries, Midnight Grand includes three distinct Atmosphere Layers that enhance the piano’s sound and integrate seamlessly with the raw samples. The intuitive interface allows you to easily adjust these layers, alongside the other array of controls, so you can focus on being inspired by the sound.
Attention to Detail
Recorded in a modern concert hall with multiple microphone positions blended into a single stereo mix, the result is a well-balanced and versatile sound—spacious but not boxy, and dry enough for flexible reverb addition.
We captured true pedal up and down samples for authentic sympathetic resonance when the sustain pedal is held down, with the product including an Alternative patch which only uses pedal-down samples for a rich, full sound even without engaging the sustain pedal.
Atmosphere Layers
Our Atmosphere Layers enhance the instrument’s sound by incorporating processed elements from the live recordings, crafted to seamlessly blend with the raw piano layer.
- The ‘Haze‘ layer adds a smooth, dreamy sustain.
- The ‘Shivers‘ layer is a textural pad, created from processed live string recordings.
- The ‘Eclipse‘ layer is a rich reversed granular delay effect, which lingers behind the raw piano.
These layers can be adjusted to your preference using the Layer Mixer. The overall ‘Atmosphere Intensity’ can be fine-tuned with the dial or dynamically controlled in real-time with the mod wheel.
Mechanical Sounds and Room Tone
With Midnight Grand, we aimed to capture the sensation of sitting alone at a grand piano in a quiet room. Beyond sampling the notes, we focused on the mechanical sounds—the hammers returning and the dampers lifting—to enhance the sense of realism.
The Room Tone control adds the natural ambience of the concert hall back into the noise-reduced samples, including subtle creaks and clicks. When used discreetly, it brings the samples to life, creating the impression of a performance in an authentic acoustic space.
