An electric piano is a musical instrument with a piano-like keyboard where sound is produced by mechanical hammers striking metal strings or reeds or wire prongs, creating vibrations which are then converted into electrical signals by transducers (either magnetic, electrostatic or piezoelectric). To amplify the sound sufficiently for the performer and audience to hear, the pickups are connected to an instrument's amplifier and speakers. In contrast to a synthesiser, the electric piano is not an electronic instrument. It is an electro-mechanical instrument.
Today's virtual instruments not only emulate the sound of vintage electric pianos (like Rhodes) very faithfully, but also have their own new and more modern sound and undeniable convenience in controlling and fine-tuning the sound of electric pianos.
